April Vacation, MCAS, Meals

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I am writing to inform you of three points, one of which is a reminder: April Vacation, MCAS, and Food Service Meals.

  1. April Vacation—The School Committee will be voting on Wednesday night (SC Meeting 04.15.20) on whether to continue school through the April Vacation, Tuesday through Friday, April 21-24 (Monday is a holiday). The administration’s position is that extending the school through the April Vacation would help to establish and maintain the schedules for remote learning that have just been put into place. We see this as a way of continuing those efforts, working out the glitches, and setting the “new normal” during school closure.

In addition, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has indicated that those days can be used as part of the school calendar and the number of days students are in school.

  1. MCAS Exams—With the passing of recent state legislation, the Commissioner of Education has canceled the 2020 MCAS exams for students in grades 3-10.

Further guidance is forthcoming on what is referred to as the “competency determination” which is required for graduation.

Food Service Meals Change of Time Reminder—Beginning tomorrow, Monday, April 13, breakfast and supper will be provided to any student interested in receiving meals between 2:30 pm and 4:00 pm. Locations remain the same:

  • Beeman and Veterans’ Elementary Schools—2:30-4:00 pm
  • Veterans' Way (Riverdale Park—2:30-4:00 pm
  • Willowood Road (next to the park)—2:30-4:00 pm

Thank you and be well,

Richard Safier, Superintendent
