What's new March 2006
We have created a health and wellness bulletin board located outside the school nurse’s office. The bulletin board will be updated regularly and seeks to provide students and staff with information and education on a variety of health topics. In addition, a question box will soon be available for students or staff to ask questions. Anyone can anonymously place a question in the locked box which will be located at the bulletin board and responses will be posted. We hope this gives students an opportunity to ask questions they may be too embarrassed to ask in person and help to clarify common misconceptions on an array of health issues. March is National Nutrition Month DID YOU KNOW? • The prevalence of overweight children and adolescents has tripled since the 1970’s • 31% of children aged 6-19 are considered to be overweight • 16% of children aged 6-19 are considered obese • Overweight and obesity are major risk factors for chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and some cancers • Adolescents who are overweight have a 40-80% probability of being overweight as an adult • Nearly 80% of high school students do not eat the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables every day Current guidelines recommend an hour of exercise every day along with a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables.
