Safe Routes to Schools
O'Maley School has partnered with Massachusetts Safe Routes to Schools, a free program and resource to educate parents, students, and school community members on the value of walking and bicycling to school. They partner with schools to encourage safe, healthy trip options and strive to reduce traffic congestion, pollution, and traffic conflicts near schools while increasing the health and mobility of students. After working with them for one year, our school also becomes eligible to receive engineering funding to make physical adaptations to the campus and surrounding areas to make them even safer for pedestrian and automobile traffic--they will assess, plan, design, and construct infrastructure improvements.
Check out what they offer here, including the concept of "The Walking School Bus" where volunteers organize a walking route and lead a group of students on a walking route to school.
The program's 3 goals: To promote physical health, environmental health, and pedestrian and bicycle safety---certainly fit well with our health and wellness program, environmental consciousness and council, recycling program, and our attention to student safety.
Check out the article in the Cape Ann Beacon about our Walk to School Day here !
